Joseph O’Neill writes regularly for The Atlantic Monthly and he
recently won the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for his critically
acclaimed novel, Netherland. O'Neil was born in Cork , Ireland , grew
up in Mozambique , South Africa Iran,Turkey,and Holland and now lives
with his family in New York . He has published two other novels as well

In 1633, Griet Reyniers invented the role of the Manhattan woman on the
prowl, personifying the bawdy world the Dutch created when they settled
in the Hudson Valley and surrounding region. On May 14th, Bill Greer
explores this world in his talk “Sex and the City: The Early Years”
as part of the New York State Library’s noontime programs.

Using art, literature and folklore, Bill will discuss the Dutch culture
of the era and the libertine characters like Griet who transplanted it

would be hard to imagine. Bakelite in Yonkers is a
dynamic exhibition of more than 300 objects that
show the development of Bakelite.
Inventor Leo Baekeland, from Belgium, invented
Bakelite at Snug Rock, his home in Yonkers between
1905 and 1907. Pioneering and brilliant, he quickly
realized the scientific and commercial value of his
discovery.
