Yesterday evening I started with the 3rd (really the 1st) exercise, making a message log special file. Last year I also did this exercise; I can reuse quite some code (especially from the user program). It's going well.

Today I finished the kernel part of the second exercise... I'm ready with the 2nd one! Already tested it quite well, but maybe I should use some kind of automatic testing. Also have to upgrade the code of the 3rd exercise.

But first I'll begin (now) with a new exercise: logging the messages given to and from the kernel, MM and FS etc. Did it last year already; won't be very hard.

Cool, finished the user program for this exercise. There is still quite some work to do but it's going well. Today I was programming from 11:00 to 23:00 (still going strong :)). I really want to go on holiday, that's why.
Now I'll start implementing the check in the FS that knows about acl's.

Well... it seems to be working now. No more file system panics, and the fsck says everything looks fine after I've used my new system call. Nice. I'm really happy I don't have to work on naked hardware, but have a nice software shell around it (with oh--a redoable disk, super).

spent the whole day programming in the file system. Still don't trust my code completely yet; but it's going. Pretty boring, alone.

Today my girlfriend left to Bulgaria for a couple of weeks... I'll miss her!

I'm working on the "rough" work now, doing copy's from kernel to user space and vv. This is pretty easy, now I'll see if I can store the data in the block.

Message found on messenger.msn.com...

"July 7, 2001/12:00 am PST

MSN Messenger continues to experience a service outage for some customers. We wholeheartedly apologize for the inconvenience you may be experiencing. Our operations team is working diligently to restore full service (including restoration of all personal contact lists) as soon as possible. Our goal was to restore service to ALL MSN Messenger customers by late Friday, July 6th. While we have restored service to many users, some accounts are still experiencing problems when trying to log in. We are working around the clock to have MSN Messenger fully restored to all users worldwide as soon as possible. Please continue to check back for updated status reports. Thank you for your patience.

The MSN Messenger Team"

Today it's the second day I'm working on the new assigment. This time I have to implement ACLs for Minix (instead of using the Unix default "rwx-w-x-r--" kind of things). Baiscally means a lot of work in the filesystem, as these ACL will be stored together with the files (not in a seperate big directory).
I feel this exercise will be easier than the previous one (bigger but easier) and take les time. Let's hope it does, maybe I can go on holiday!

My MSN Messenger account is now completely down...

Still going strong, I really think I'm done with the programming for the first exercise. For those interested, here you can see what the kernel shows when I try to start a 800kb process while there are 2 separate holes, one of 500kb and one of 300kb...

Today is even gonna be hotter than yesterday... and yep; still inside :) But today's going well. First of all: it works! My system call "memory defrag" actually defrags the memory, both text and data segments and updates the freelist error-free*. Means I can start on a new exercise today! A few things to be done, the most important one is let the method be called before the exec system call, but this will be trivial. Finish some documentation, clean up my code, and deploy it. But the thing works, jippie!

And another good thing is that the people renovating our flat are done with our balconies, so the noise in the morning won't come from straight next to the bed anymore but from a floor higher...

Somehow all my contacts in MSN Messenger have disappeared... no idea how!

*(I think).
