Games & 999

By Guus , 25 August 2002

Life from Leeuwarden, there is a couple of internet computers here. We're in an interesting place, it called Wolweze, and it's a student organisation's bar/disco. The name means 'Being Well', in Frisian. It's Leeuwarden after all.

The tournament is going quite well, there are 20 people playing and we're ahead of schedule. We started Steden & Ridders, the last game, at 13:15 so we should be done early. I'm here with Martijn, it's cosy. Because we have done this kind of tournament so often everything goes smooth and the people are very friendly. Interesting enough there are many people from other provinces, I expected a lot of Frisians but there are people from The Hague, Rotterdam, all over!

My parents are also playing, but unfortunately the first game results were not very good, they're 15th and 16th after 2 rounds. Let's just hope they'll perform better in the last one...

In a few weeks (September 29th) there'll be a tournament in Haarlem also. Next to being an obvious improvement considering traveling time it's also a very nice idea to know that it will be very busy: there are about 50 applications already. For more information or applying -be quick- look at 999 Games' website.

Well, early enough... I'm leaving to Leeuwarden, as there will be a 999 Games Kolonisten toernooi. Special this time is that my parents will play too!

Went out with my parents yesterday evening, in a really nice cafe, In den Uiver. Their website doesn't really give a good impression on what kind of bar they are. It's a historical building, and they've decorated it with all kinds of stuff related to aviation.

We played Steden & Ridders again, because Sunday there will be a tournament in Leeuwarden where my parents will play. We were sitting in the back of the cafe, there's a room with two big tables; perfect for playing games. And even though it was Thursday evening it wasn't crowded so there was room enough. There was a life-jazz band playing, really nice.

So it was a very pleasant evening with my parents: games, nice beers, life music... Of course my mother won again. I hope she will play well Sunday also.

Just a reminder for myself: this website contains some other useful information :)

This weekend I went to see my parents, had some stuff to do there. Yesterday we with to visit my grandmother. The weather was very nice and we went to a small harbour in Friesland where we spent 2 hours watching the boats. There were many young people on sailing-holidays, and not all of them were really experienced with sailing, so it was an interesting view.

Saturday evening I played Steden & Ridders with my parents. I like this a lot better than the original Kolonisten! It was their first time playing this game but... my mother won! Picture courtesy Spellengek.

Currently I'm at my work, fixed the Office problem and brought back my old laptop. My desk is starting already to feel cosy, the worst mess is gone and I moved my own stuff here already. Hope to find some pictures of the Chess building, or -even better- a digital camera to put a picture of my new desk online.

so, we played 99 today... and I became 3rd! I'm rather proud. :) We played 4 preliminaries, of which I won 2 and become 2nd in another one. Only the first game, against Erika and Albert I lost quite badly. The final was between Zoltan, Jerry and me.

The final results:

  1. Zoltan
  2. Jerry

  3. Guus
  4. Albert
  5. Daniel
  6. Rob
  7. Marjolein
  8. Erika
  9. Gerlof

Tomorrow and the whole week I'll be studying.

Had dinner with at Daniel yesterday, Michel was also there. It was really nice. We played some kind of robot-game (Daniel won big time) and Halli Galli, a silly nice game which I won every time.

Jerry and Marjolein were here tonight, it was really nice. Burned the rice. Played again Carcassone. The ex-king of Bulgaria will have 120 of the 240 representatives in parlement. It's good he doesn't have a complete majority, more healthy to rule together with another party I think. At work I made Makefiles again, one of them for compiling the JSP part.
