Politics & News

By Guus , 14 December 2003

It's the first time I saw "breaking news" in Bulgarian... I was watching some TV (which is a great way to learn Bulgarian), when I saw a news-ticker with Saddam Hussein's name.

It's simply wonderful news, especially for the Iraq people. And a huge boost for the morale of the troops there, too.

For a long time I've been interested in American politics. Especially now the elections are approaching (about a year to go), I enjoy reading about the candidates and the campagnes.

A great Dutch website I recently found is Amerika.nl. It's a website that accompanies Dakota, a magazine. The site is an initiative of Frans Verhagen, who's online diary is probably the part I like the best -- sharp observations and strong opinions. Not that I always agree with his view, but it's a pleasure to read: "Essentially Sharon told Bush: Fuck you. And Bush said: thank you, Ariel."

Europe and ItalyA colleague send me a hilarious Flash animation on the difference between Europe and Italy. I really loved the part of pedestrians crossing the road.

Download it here. It's quite big, 1.5 MB, but it's worth every byte of downloading.

On teletext this morning:

Teletext picture, with title: LPF-bestuur blijft om 'ongedierte'

"As long as this kind of eruptions happen in the vulcano that is the LPF, we'll stay. For the LPF, it is as with vermin. Just when you think you've killed them all, they will come back again." -- Hammerstein, LPF board member.

Read it here, or read what Dutch people like to do on their holidays.

It would be great if the war is really going as 'easy' at it seems to be going now. Let's hope that Saddam Hussein can be kicked out quickly.

Although I believe that a war to remove Saddam Hussein is justified and necessary, it is a day of sadness today.

Let's hope that the war will be as short as possible.

When I woke up many TV channels had special editions about the war. Even the Economist.com website, which usually only gets updated around 15:00 o'clock seems to have been updated during the night. They have a picture gallery.

Started ridiciously early today... it's 8.00 o'clock!
