It was slower than 2 days ago but that's usual for my early morning runs. I went to bed at 10.30 pm and promptly woke up at 6.00 am.

Terrific book. When I was a kid, I read Contact from the same author. I still remember the location of the book in the library in Middenmeer, just around the corner from the main hallway.

Cosmos is a terrific book, very energizing and hopeful.

The Adventure of English is an enjoyable book about the history of the English language. It gives a good summary of the main events that shaped English.

It is written from a British perspective. The anthropomorphism by the author of treating English as a "person" is a little weird but doesn't interfere too much with the text: "But English was too smart to be pinned down, even by the English".

Author loves language but has a survivors bias in claiming that English was uniquely adapteble and therefore strong.

This book was recommended by Eric.

Hard to believe we have snow again, it being March 3rd already, but it is what it is. Yesterday I went for nice pre-snow run, it was warm.

Jim Hash, a friendly face in the neighborhood, passed away last week.

We met him when we lived near his house on Custis Street two years ago, and we always stopped for a chat. He loved seeing Nora and always smiled at her. When he learned we were looking for a house, he tried to help us.

It is sad to hear about his passing.

After Saturday's run, which left me in pain the next day, I took it easy and skipped Tuesday's run (went for a swim instead). Yesterday I ran for the first time and it went well, no pain.

Guus: "Is Nora Bulgaars?"
Nora giggles.
Guus: "Is Nora Nederlands?"
Nora giggles again.
Nora: "Nora is panda!"

I was making hutspot, and part of the recipe is to mash ingredients together ("stampen").
Nora: "Net als mevrouw Helderder!"
Guus: "Mevrouw Helderder?"
Nora: "Oh!"
And then it dawned on me: Mevrouw Helderder always stamps on the floor (also "stampen").

Two weeks ago I ran my 6 mile route and wrote: "it doesn't look like it, but the forecast is for snow". Well, the snow has finally melted and the trails and sidewalks are all clear (except near the pawnshop on Lee Highway). I reset my watch by accident after the run so I don't know my time but the run went well though I felt tired. It's good that I didn't do 7 miles yet. It's sure tempting to start thinking about longer races again!

Update 2/23:

By Guus , 21 February 2014

We celebrated Sasha's birthday the three of us at home, and had our parents on through Skype.

We had a small cake with candles and in the evening we went out for dinner. We ordered a plate for Nora separately, for the first time.

It's good that the snow has melted today because I took Nora out for a run. Sasha wrote that she'd be home a little later and I hadn't ran in New Jersey so the timing worked out nicely.
