One of the most famous and legendary Dutch cabaretiers is coming to Chicago - Freek de Jonge. He first hit the stage at age 11 and starting in 1965 collaborated with other students after he arrived in Amsterdam for his studies. By 1969, Freek and his partner, Bram Vermeulen, did their first full evening show - Dutch Music & Comedy Show, Neerlands Hoop in Bange Dagen. Bram en Freek's songs, jokes and style were unique in Dutch cabaret and provided important commentary on issues of the day. Since 1980, Freek de Jonge has concentrated his efforts on a solo career.

I'm working from D.C. this week, from the house where Sasha is staying for her internship. It's on P Street in Georgetown, and falls under the "Zone 2" parking restrictions. Without a permit you can park on the street only for two hours.

So, every two hours I have move our car. This is funny, because there are so many empty parking spots during the day.

Petra has kindly offered that we can park at their house, a few metro stops away. If the moving becomes bothersome I'll park there for a few days.

Pretentious and stuffy -- this was not a fun book to read. But it's on my list of books I wanted to read, so I struggled through it.

An example of the gratuitous pompous language:

"Its alternation of sad human ineffectualness with vast inhuman cycles of activity chilled him, and he forgot his own human and ineffectual grieving."

The long description of hell was interesting -- clearly, this was on the author's mind a lot.

I could hardly wait until I finished this book. This is the second coming-of-age book that I really didn't like, the other was The Catcher in the Rye.

In any case, I know now that I will not try to read Ulysses.

The Netherlands Carillon is a bell tower located on the Virginia shore of the Potomac River opposite Washington, D.C. and bordering the northern end of Arlington National Cemetery, adjacent to the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.

It is a gift from the Dutch people in honor of American aid received during and after World War II.

Not to be missed are the thousands of tulips, which are imported yearly from the Netherlands to ensure a uniform blooming time, size, height and flower. Peak blooming time is normally early April through early May.

"My name is Nakita, and I am "The Dutch Lady". I was born in South Limburg, the Netherlands and raised in Maastricht, Holland, the home of the European Congress. I spent several years in Bruge, Belgium, learning about lace and textiles from many of Europe's finest artisans. I opened by shop, Nakita's Stickereien, in Heidelberg, Germany nearly ten years ago. People from around the world came to the shop everyday. Although I closed the shop in November, 2003 and moved to Washington, D.C., I knew I wanted to open a new shop in my new country, and opened The Dutch Lady."
