I've been reading an interesting book, "The Collapse of Chaos", last week. It deals with chaos and complexity, and how some mathematical complications fundamentely affect other sciences like biology, physics and economics.

Related to this I read a nice joke on Slashdot:

"Biologists like to think they are chemists. Chemists like to think they are physicists. Physicists like to think they are mathematicians. And mathematicians like to think they are god."

I'm working on the last assignment of Internet Programming. The weather is very nice again today, so I'm sitting at the large table, at the window. This morning I bought a longer cable, so now I have internet next at the window as well.

It's very busy on the river. A few minutes ago there were 3 water scooters passing, the ones you'll sometimes see at the sea-side.

Grote MarktI'm going home. It's simply too great weather to spend inside!

We had lunch outside too, at the Grote Markt.

I'm a Chess now. Obviously it's very quiet here, many people took today off to enjoy a long weekend. I think in the whole building there are maybe 5 or 6 people.

Moved my stuff to the 2nd floor for today, there's another collegue working there.

The weather is just great; I'm really happy about it.

Today I was working on the laptop next to the open window, for a refreshing breeze. And then I heard: "Hi Guus!". Rob & Kirsten were there downstairs, they came by bike from the beach.

It was a nice surprise, and we went to the Grote Markt. We had a few drinks there, enjoying the sun.

Today Ettie, Karen and Jaap were on a boat-trip in Friesland; they couldn't have picked a better day! On the Spaarne there were many small boats as well.

Every now and then I order a book to study through my work at Chess. The title of this book is quite ambitious, and it had a good review on Slashdot, so I decided to try it. Unfortunately it was not as good as the cover looks. The books is well-written, but contains hardly anything new. Most of it is just basic computer science, or can be found in older books on J2EE patterns.

After "The Science of Discworld" I got really interested in the work of Cohen and Stewart. Terry Pratchett's work has no secrets anymore. I went to the library and I found the The Collapse of Chaos (in a Dutch translation).

It certainly didn't disappoint me! A very interesting book on science, its history and its philosophy.

Picture made by Websnacks.nlWhen I started smelling smoke, my first thought was to look at my monitor. I had a computer monitor on fire once, many years ago.

The smoke came from outside, there's was a huge black cloud coming from the Waarderpolder. I didn't have a lot to do, so I went to take a look. There's a building on fire on the Waarderweg, near the Vomar but at the other side of the river. The smoke smells a bit like that from the steam-trains in Opperdoes. Only there is a lot more of it, of course.

It's seems like quite a large fire, let's hope nobody gets hurt.

Oh, what a beautiful weather! It's quiet here at Chess; many people left already. I feel a lot better now than a week ago; my cold is almost over.

More good news: the deadline for the 5th assignment of Internet Programming has been extended with a week.

Ettie just called; her hamster Hammie died.

Too bad, it was a very nice animal. It stayed in our apartment last year, when Ettie wasn't home for a couple of days. It was quite noisy during the night, with its running-wheel.
