A book by Rick van der Ploeg, economist and ex-minister of Cultural Affairs. It's very interesting and well written that gives insight in the trade-offs politicians have to make between effectiveness and fairness of policies.

As Labour politician he is in favour of a society based on solidarity, as an economist he is in favour of free markets and (economical) liberalism. I liked it a lot to read about how he deals with these two goals.

Jerry just won. His strategy with the 'steengroeves' (stonemines) turned out to be a winning one. The result:

  • 1. Jerry, 44 pts
  • 2. Marjolein, 31 pts
  • 3. Guus, 27 pts
  • 4. Daniel, 24 pts
  • 5. Ronald (played for the first time), 23 pts

In the mean time Zoltan came home, so we'll start a new game for 6 people. Not sure which game yet.

Daniel came back Tuesday evening and we made an appointment to play a few boardgames tonight with Jerry and Marjolein.

First I went to Jerry's, but there was nobody there to open the door. Then I remember that we agreed on Zoltan's place... luckily enough their houses are close to each other.

We looked at Sterrenschiff, a new Catan game. Quite interesting. Later Ronald arrived, and now we'll play Puerto Rico. Let's see how it will work out this time...

    The Economist this week:

"The name is Wouter Bos. He's a miracle-worker. He brings political parties back from the (almost) dead. [...]

The Fortuynists' disarray has cut their own throats (they may get half a dozen seats, say pollsters). But Mr Bos has twisted the knife. When he went on the stump in one of Rotterdam's most Fortuynist areas, it was plain that working-class voters were swinging back to Labour in droves."

"Why do ducks have webbed feet? To stamp out fires.

Why do elephants have flat feet? To stamp out burning ducks."

It would be great if it is true that Job Cohen is the candidate prime minister of the Labour party. Yesterday he said:

(,,We took foreigners to do the jobs we don't feel like doing. We still need them for that. [...] Don't be mistaken: many foreigners are very eager to go for it in Holland, an eagerness I don't always see in the natives.")
